Social Masking- 2022
This Project explored my relationship to social masking as an autistic person. People with autism social mask in order to fit in, make connections and have access to the neurotypical world. When social masking, autistic people will hide and conceal their autistic traits in social situations in order to be seen as neurotypical. This causes autistic people to loose their sense of identity and neglect their true selves. This also impacts emotional wellbeing as any negative emotion is restrained and concealed. Here I explore my perspective on social masking through collaging printed cut-outs and using two toned lighting to present the duality and manufactured nature of masking.
